ZX Uno - manual build :)

Mensaje por mRqS » 06 Mar 2017, 20:35

Hi Guys

Since beginning of the zx spectrum era, I've been fan of this machine (that's how my IT life started 35 years ago).
Recently, I've got an idea to build ZX Uno myself (I could do it "easy way" and just order one, but wanted to have some more fun).
I've got the PCB and ordered all the parts.
Still, some parts are missing (they're, perhaps, somewhere on the ocean yet....), but it's like 99% completed.
In mean time I've also printed the case (using Ultimaker 2+ printer).
What you see below is the "standard quality" mode.
It's gray, because I've had no black filament.
Not a big issue - I'll just paint it.

I'm going to put here more pictures and info as soon as I complete it. I hope - it will boot without any issues :)

Antonio - thanks a lot for help and advise!

Marek

Why did you use the V4 PCB prototype instead of the final V4.1 revision?

The answer is simple: that was the only board I've had :) As I've understood, the changes are minor.
I'm also aware of the design fault in placement of L2 and U7 :)

It took some time to complete, since I'v been waiting for delivery of the last parts.
Unfortunatelly, looks like I did something wrong, as the only thing I get, is this picture.
Do you have any idea what went wrong and where to look for fix?

Did you write the SPI flash chip?

Yes, I've got the pre-programmed SPI.
I've just found the issue: a small short on the FPGA.
It works now :)

The only thing, that doesn't work is the HDMI module. It gets the power, as the led it lit, but no signal via hdmi.

Obviously, as expected ;)
Every core has to be coded specifically to work with the HDMI addon. As it is FPGA resource consuming and the resolutions at the Spartan-6 speeds are very very limited, is not possible to include it in most cases. At this moment there are no cores with HDMI support (well, only one, one old version of my SMS port, with experimental HDMI output, without sound. Let me know if you want to test it. It only works on certain monitors that support that low resolutions over HDMI.)

Ha! That makes sense :) haha
Antonio also told me already that it has to be supported by the core.
FIrst I need to find time then to build the vga cable and find the working keyboard :)
Once this is done - I can start experimenting.
